Rugby League World Cup - PNG vs Ireland

Today's game meant another early start for Europe-based fans and those watching live would have experienced a much more nail-biting affair than PNGs previous game.

Papua New Guinea on film - Your favourites

Today I'm looking for some tips on Papua New Guinea on film. What are your favourite films about or by PNGians?

The majority of TV and film representation of PNG that reaches the UK is of the documentary variety. Beautiful birds of paradise and rare animals bring TV experts flocking to the islands and make for a stunning visual display.

A new documentary called Headhunt Revisited retraces the footsteps of two women who went to PNG in the 1920s to draw, paint and photograph local residents. It combines their story with the US photographer who is trying to trace their journey and adds the input of modern PNG artist Jeffry Feager who creates new portraits of Papua New Guineans today.

Historical films involving PNG tend to relate to the Second World War where external parties came to blows within the challenging landscape of the Kokoda Track. These focus on the incoming soldiers rather than the people of PNG.

I can imagine there are many challenges to filming in Papua New Guinea, which may result in this lack of representation. However I'd love to hear of modern films about PNG and its people that you have enjoyed.

Rugby League World Cup 2017 - PNG Vs Wales

Photo: NRL Photos

The Rugby League World Cup 2017 began with a bang for the Papua New Guinea team last Saturday. As co-hosts of the tournament, Kumuls fans settled into the National Football Stadium with a great deal of anticipation. Previous meetings against their opponents Wales had not been promising, but with many of their side having achieved great things in the NRL and a home advantage they were aware that the odds were different this time.

Busy November Ahead!

Since the start of 2017 I've been setting myself a variety of monthly challenges to encourage me to get into good habits, try something new or improve my skills. I've had a varying degree of success, but I've mostly found them a positive exercise.

I've decided for November I'm going to post something daily on this blog, to get into the habit of blogging regularly. Some will be scheduled but I'll still be working on producing lots of content throughout the month. Expect more Time Beyond Tumbuna stories, commentary on the Rugby League World Cup 2017 and at least one food post, yum!

If you can think of any PNG subjects that I can write about, then please let me know in the comments or on Twitter at @PNGEmmy.

Looking forward to the coming month!

6 Month Hiatus

I've had six months away from writing this blog and I have to say I've missed it. I've still been learning about PNG (I hope never to stop!) but things had slowed down somewhat.

However, not deterred, here are three of my favourite sports-related PNG things that have caught my attention whilst I've been away.

Hello 2016!

Happy New Year friends, readers and wantoks!

I have a few resolutions for this blog for 2016:
  1. Write up some more Time Beyond Tumbuna stories
  2. Cook a PNG themed meal
  3. Take my PNG flag back to the Tour de Yorkshire (and hold it the right way up this time!)
  4. Find out more about my family links to PNG
  5. Support PNG in the Rio Olympics
I'd also like to know what you think about the blog - Write a comment below, or, even better, contact me on Twitter @PNGEmmy
